You sit in a dimly lit restaurant with your best friend, trying to meet her eyes with yours without letting her know. That one time, your eyes go on autopilot and target her beautifully painted pupils.

Your hands are moving, your mouth is speaking, your ears are listening, but your mind… boy, your mind froze for a second, didn’t it. It wants your body to lean in and peck a kiss on that pimple-covered cheek, to make her heart hear what yours has to say about her impeccable beauty.

But for some reason, it won’t. You just stare at her mouth rambling about how memorable her day was, when for you, the whole day is about her. The whole world is about her.

You simply sit there like an android, replying to her questions and return her smiles awkwardly. Sometimes your brain takes intervals to make sure she doesn’t hear your heart squealing under your ribs for that goddamn kiss.

The moment you snap out of it, the world seems to turn cold all of a sudden. You wanted that split-second warmth to last a lifetime, but you know it can’t. You very well know her heart couldn’t meet yours. At least not in this lifetime. Like my Google Pay scratch card says, “Better Luck Next Time!”

Your heart aches to settle. For once in your life, it needs to stop crumbling and rest without anyone setting up the alarm. But it knows that’s not happening for a really long time.

It knows that one day, it will get its long yearning rest, but, all it can do is hope and wait for that day. Maybe this time it would be alright. Maybe this time everything it worked for, will be worth it.
