How do you Know when People Surprise Us?
Your heart bathes in the river of vulnerability, with a bed filled with crumbles left behind by the past. People enter with bright intentions, at least it seemed bright at first, but they always plundered, took, and left before first light.
They step in, hoping to find the oasis in the deserted land, but you leave them disappointed when they see your thorny path. They smell the rosy roses and taste the fruity fruits they find along the way until their feet are too bloody to walk further. Years pass by, number of chances adds up, but not one decided to plant. Now you’re left with bloody thorns and dry ground that no one would dare to enter. A forbidden land, you may call that.
Without realizing it, you could see the barbed-wired fence building up around your thorny pathways. A small red board hanging on the door says “DANGER”. Now that you notice the door’s still unlocked, you build the strongest lock and hung to keep thieves from entering.
One day, your world shakes, and the ground trembles in defense. An unyielding force breaking the barriers and barging in, forcing you to reveal your scars. You put up a fight, hoping to stop him from letting in, but tired, you settle. Now that the lock is finally broken from the fight, you have no choice but to let him in and watch him pick the remnants. Not bothered by his presence or his absence, you try to stay afloat on the river of acceptance.
As days passed, the scents in the air changed. You notice the weeds being plucked and look for your thorny garden. Musky scents of rose and lilies slowly crawled into your nose and the juicy fruits you could literally taste without taking a bite. You wonder why the thorns are there, still brushed in blood and tears.
You squint your eyes to find him at the corner, bent over with specks of seeds in his hand, sowing one by one in your now-fertile garden. His face breaks a smile each time he steps on the thorn. You don’t anymore wonder why its still blood-brushed. Unlikely, you puzzle. The garden once deserted is now a beautiful nursery.
Unable to blurt out words, you simply look at him in shock. Gradually your face forces you to smile, showing him that you’re glad you hung out a breakable lock.
